Nema was founded by Dr. Sofia Noori, Mariam Malik, and Dr. Isobel Rosenthal—three women brought together by their desire to help trauma survivors find lasting peace. Noori and Rosenthal, who are respectively Yale and Columbia-trained psychiatrists, were struck during their medical training that PTSD remains widely underdiagnosed and undertreated outside of the VA. When they discovered the best available treatments, including Cognitive Processing Therapy, they knew they needed to bring these treatments to the general population.
Simultaneously, Mariam Malik had devoted her career to bringing quality mental healthcare to underserved populations—she had spent six years at 1DocWay/Genoa Telepsychiatry building out the operations and ultimately became the CEO. She also spent her years at UPenn’s Wharton School studying the systemic and macro influences on healthcare.
With the help of a grant from the American Psychiatric Association, Nema Health began as a pilot program. Each of these women came to Nema with deep-rooted personal experience in trauma that connects them to the heart of their mission and are hopeful that Nema can build a more peaceful world for survivors.
