Elliot offers support through psychoeducation, encouragement, and social connection.
I've worked in the mental health field for several years now, and I kept finding myself drawn to positions working in a Peer capacity because I seem to really connect with people who "get it" in terms of dealing with mental health issues. I am really excited about my role with Nema because I think we are doing amazing things in terms of using the best-available science to help people regain functioning that PTSD symptoms may have taken from them.
For a long time, it didn't seem like recovery from complex PTSD was ever going to happen for me. I felt like there was no point in having dreams about how I could contribute to the world. Since I got my mental health on track, I got sober, got married, applied to college, finished my degree, and applied to graduate school. Life becomes so much easier when you're not burdened by PTSD symptoms, and I was able to achieve the things I always wanted. It's not impossible; you just need some help.
I would say that one of my gifts is using my lived experience in the mental health system to walk people through the journey- every step of the way. I've been there, and you can trust me to advocate relentlessly for you in all areas of your treatment, even the behind the scenes things you can't see. I have prepared for 10 years to be good at what I do as a Peer Navigator. It's empowering to use my story to encourage and inspire others, and one day, I believe you'll be doing the same.
